It's Show and Tell Time!

Villainous, Impressive Cherie

Posted in Movies, People by Sandwich on July 18, 2009

Cherie Gil has immortalized this line: “You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat” in the 1985 movie Bituing Walang Ningning. She has become one of the most effective villains in Filipino showbizness. Why do I say this? It’s because I have not seen that film, but I still know the line, and I know that scene. That’s how famous she is. Her line is being delivered by people, even till now.

Cherie GilA few minutes ago, I was able to catch Ngayon at Kailanman (1992) on TV. She stars in it, together with the same protagonist, Sharon Cuneta.

I just had to write about it, because aside from all the usual elements of Filipino drama–endless arguments, shouts, tears, slaps, liquids thrown at faces, and the man they fight over with–there was something new. A coffin. Cherie Gil sent over a coffin at Sharon’s wedding, wishing Sharon to die soon. Sharon sent back the same coffin at Cherie’s birthday, wishing Cherie to die sooner. How creative is that? Hahaha!

The thing is, in that movie, between her and Sharon, I’m thinking Cherie is the better actress. Far more convincing. Why? Because Sharon didn’t look every inch a protagonist. She was shouting at everyone–even at the man she loved, while Cherie was cool, composed and classy. Cherie was way better. Hope I’d catch Bituing Walang Ningning on TV too.
